Daily Prayers for Lent

Sunday

God, our Father, as I begin this week of Lent, I pray to You for the grace I need to persevere in my daily efforts to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, my Lord and Savior.   Through my sacrifices and prayers, help me to commemorate the sufferings and death of Jesus, Your Son, so that one day I may share in the glory of His Resurrection.   Amen

Monday

Jesus was obedient to You, Father, in everything, even death.  May His example of faith in Your will, in Your love for Him, strengthen me in my resolution to place myself, my life, in Your loving hands.  May my Lenten sacrifices make faith the cornerstone of my life so that my daily example will help others to see Your presence at work in their lives and in our world.  Amen.

Tuesday

Heavenly Father, I ask you today and throughout this season of Lent for a better understanding of, even an appreciation of the need for suffering in my life.  Jesus suffered and died for all people.  May my sacrifices, the sufferings, the crosses I am asked to endure in this life in some way complement the sufferings of Jesus, so that sharing in His work of redemption, I may experience the eternal happiness He reserves for those who do His work.  Amen.

Wednesday

Throughout all of His life and, in particular, in His final days, Jesus left us, Father, an unmistakably clear example of the importance of forgiveness in our lives.    Without exception, He forgave one and all, even those responsible for His sufferings and death.  Help me to imitate Jesus' ability, His willingness to forgive.    Help me to overlook the slights and judgements passed on me by others.   May my Lenten sacrifices enable me to open my heart, my life to one and all, forgiving and forgetting as Jesus did.  Amen.

Thursday

In Jesus' name, Father, I ask You today for the grace to see all people as Jesus saw them.  Help me to sacrifice something of my possessions, my life for the poor, for the sick, the aged and the lonely.  All that I have You have given me.  Help me to share Your goodness so that through me others may come to recognize and to love You, Your Son and the Spirit.  Amen.

Friday

Father, on this day each week during the year, the Church encourages us to recall, through personal sacrifice, the death of Jesus.  May my Lenten prayers, fasting and works of mercy be in some small way an act of thanksgiving to Jesus for all that He endured for me.  May His example be my strength in life and in death.   Amen.

Saturday

May I live each day of Lent, Father, for others.  May my sacrifices all be made in the name of Jesus and for those who need His help, His love in this world.   Help me to pray, to sacrifice, to fast so that others who suffer from poverty and from injustice in this world may take courage in the knowledge that they are loved and that a better life, a greater happiness is in store for them in Your kingdom.  Amen.
